Plot
Timberlake Wertenbaker’s The Love of the Nightingale
A play about passion, desire, vengeance, and the power of words.
Based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, The Love of the Nightingale relates the ancient story of Philomele and Procne, two Athenian Princesses. Married off to the Thracian king Tereus, Procne longs for her sister’s company and sends her husband to Athens to fetch her. On the journey back to Thrace, Tereus falls in love with the passionate young woman and, thus, the tragedy takes its course.
